Michael Pollan Interview

A very enlightening interview with Michael Pollan, probably the foremost 'food intellectual' of our time, at Mother Jones regarding the structure of our food production industries:

Ad lib Dinner

At the risks of this blog being just me posting to myself, then making comments on what I already posted, let me tell you (me) about the dinner I made last night.

It was nothing groundbreaking, but it was fast, stupidly healthy, relatively inexpensive, and most importantly, delicious. I was walking by DiBruno Brothers and suddenly craved a grain-type salad with peas and raisins (who knows where that came from?) and popped in. I grabbed some sugar snap peas, pine nuts, some shrimp, pretty much anything that looked good. The grain became orzo pasta, and at the last second I grabbed an onion and a red bell pepper.

Long story short, I sauteed the shrimp in some olive oil after seasoning with fennel, cumin and paprika, then the onions & pepper, adding balsamic, reducing, adding raisins...

Anyway, all that tossed together with toasted pine nuts proved to be amazing. Like way better than I had imagined. I'll write up a recipe soon.

Thanksfeasting Recap

-work in progress-

Crostini with Cran-Cherry Compote and Ricotta

Cook's Note (Ben): This is not your mother's sweet, tart cranberry salad. This compote beats that salad up, steals its lunch money and spends it all on booze and loose women. It's more of a savory cranberry salad that is reduced down to a staggering intensity.

Challenge 1: Pimp My Breakfast

"He that but looketh on a plate of ham and eggs to lust after it hath already committed breakfast with it in his heart"
-C.S. Lewis

We thought it fitting that we should kick off this here blog with a challenge based on that most important meal of the day. You love it, I love it, we all love it. No, not puppies (ok so we all in fact DO love puppies, but that's off topic). Breakfast. No meal is so universally loved, yet so diligently neglected when it comes to culinary innovation.

Therefore this month's challenge: Pimp My Breakfast!
